Disability Pride Month
July is Disability Pride Month
Every July, communities across the United States celebrate Disability Pride Month—a time to honor the history, achievements, experiences, and contributions of people with disabilities. The month commemorates the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on July 26, 1990, a landmark civil rights law that helped break down barriers and expand opportunities for millions of Americans with disabilities.
Disability Pride Month is about more than recognizing the progress that has been made. It is also about embracing disability as a natural and valuable part of human diversity. Disability pride encourages individuals to reject stigma, celebrate their identities, and recognize the strength, resilience, and unique perspectives that people with disabilities bring to our communities.
More than one in four adults in the United States lives with a disability, making the disability community the nation’s largest minority group. Yet many people with disabilities continue to face barriers to employment, housing, transportation, healthcare, and community participation. Disability Pride Month serves as a reminder that creating an inclusive society requires ongoing commitment, advocacy, and action.
At Disability Network Mid-Michigan, we believe that disability is not something to be hidden or overcome—it is an important part of the rich diversity that strengthens our communities. This year’s theme is “The World Works Better With Us.” When people with disabilities are included, respected, and supported, communities work better for everyone. That includes schools, workplaces, healthcare, transportation, and public life.
Happy Disability Pride Month!
