International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Celebrating Inclusion, Access, and Community

Each year on December 3, communities around the world recognize the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD)—a day dedicated to promoting understanding, advancing disability rights, and celebrating the contributions of people with disabilities in every part of society.

At Disability Network Mid-Michigan, this day reinforces what we champion year-round: Inclusion is essential. Accessibility is non-negotiable. Disability is a natural part of the human experience.

Why This Day Matters

More than one billion people across the globe live with a disability, representing the world’s largest minority group. Yet many still face barriers to transportation, employment, health care, housing, education, and community participation. IDPD is an opportunity to shine a spotlight on these inequities and recommit to removing the barriers that prevent full participation.

Disability Network Mid-Michigan works every day to support people with disabilities in achieving independence, connecting with resources, and advocating for systems change. Our programs promote:

  • Independent living
  • Peer support and community connection
  • Advocacy
  • Educational and employment support
  • Inclusive community design

On this day—and every day—you can help advance inclusion in our community by:

  • Learning about accessibility and disability rights
  • Supporting local disability advocacy organizations
  • Encouraging inclusive policies and practices in workplaces and public spaces
  • Listening to and amplifying the voices of people with disabilities

Together, we can build a Mid-Michigan where everyone can live, work, play, and thrive without barriers.
